Here’s more about the role and what we’re looking for;

University Hospitals of Derby and Burton NHS Foundation Trust are looking to recruit 2 new Consultants to join our existing team as we look to build on our recent expansion and successes.

The organisation was formed on 1st July 2018 to bring together our five hospitals in Derby, Burton, Lichfield and Tamworth to provide the highest quality care to patients across southern Derbyshire and south east Staffordshire.

The post holders’ base will be the Royal Derby Hospital, but the posts may potentially involve cross-site working at our Queen’s Hospital in Burton and community hospitals in the future.

The Medicine for the Elderly department has developed and expanded considerably over the past 5 years. At Royal Derby Hospital site there are 9 Consultants and 4 acute inpatient geriatric wards and at Queen’s Hospital, Burton we have 4 Consultants and 1 acute older person inpatient ward.

The department has recently appointed our first academic consultant Clinical Associate Professor Adam Gordon. This has enhanced the varied research options within the department and allowed us to establish a Geriatric Liaison service to provide in-reach services throughout the Trust and provide specific support to general surgery and their emergency laparotomy patients in line with the NELA guidance.

To help at the interface between the front door and community we have developed the Frail Elderly Assessment Team (FEAT) which works across MAU, ED and the short stay wards to highlight frail older patients at the interface and to commence comprehensive geriatric assessment (CGA). This multi-disciplinary team was nominated for a national HSJ award and been highlighted by the Kings Fund, ECIST and HSJ as an example of innovative best practice.

We have specialist clinics for falls and frailty (rapid access) in addition to Parkinson’s disease (Winners Hospital Doctor Parkinson’s Disease Team of the Year 2007, National Parkinson’s Foundation Centre of Excellence).

We are looking for candidates who can build on the success of our services and help develop them further in the future as we strive to make care for the frail older patients better than ever. Candidates with previous consultant experience and new CCT-holders are encouraged to apply. You must possess MBBS/MBCH and MRCP or equivalent, full GMC Registration with a License to Practice, be on the GMC Specialist Register and have 5 years supervised training in an appropriate StR training programme or equivalent.

Why UHDB? The Royal Derby Hospital is the region’s newest purpose-built acute hospital and has the East Midland’s only rooftop helipad. We are ranked in the top 20% of Acute Trusts in England for staff recommending us as a place to work and receive treatment. We know that staff satisfaction is inextricably linked to patient satisfaction and we recruit staff who subscribe to our values of compassion, attitude, respect and equality. By living our values we have a culture that puts patients at the heart of everything we do. The Trust is an Equal Opportunities employer and operates employee-friendly policies, including job share.

Derby offers the best of both worlds – cosmopolitan city life on the doorstep of stunning countryside. Described by The Rough Guide 2015 as “the unsung hero of the Midlands”, Derby is an excellent city to work & live in. UHDB will consider relocation expenses and enhanced Terms and Conditions on appointment, depending on previous experience.

As a newly merged organisation, we expect flexibility to be able to work across all sites of University Hospitals of Derby and Burton Foundation Trust should the need arise.
